Giving Back (Packs) to Foster Children
Imagine you have just been taken from your home, your parents, and maybe even your siblings. You are put in the back of a car with very few belongings (usually in a trash bag) and are headed for the unknown. You might be headed for a police station, a social worker’s office or a foster home.
We have seen that a simple backpack can help give comfort to a child who can’t help but feel alone in a traumatic situation. At Malibu Pres, we decided to bring hope to some brave and deserving kids!
We started with 75 empty backpacks. The Congregation was invited to take a backpack home if they felt led, and were encouraged to fill the backpacks with comfort items. (We were praying hard that all 75 backpacks would be picked up). About five minutes after the service, every single back pack was gone! Attendees were so inspired that they decided to buy their own backpacks and fill them up as well! A few weeks later, we there were over 125 backpacks flooding the Sanctuary!
We were so inspired by the outpouring of love by our congregation, that we decided to involve our Teen Challenge Group (a faith-based organization that helps individuals overcome addiction) which meets at Malibu Pres monthly. The ladies loved stuffing the backpacks with blankets, coloring books, toiletries, and teddy bears. Many women shared that they have children in foster care as well. One brave woman even told us that she was in foster care for 11 years, and she explained how much it meant to her to be able to give back to children in the system!
With 75 more backpacks filled, our total has come to over 200 backpacks (and we have prayed over every single one!) We decided to distribute them to a few different areas-the LA County Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS), children in court at the Children’s Law Firm in LA, and The Genesis Dream Foundation, a Christian orphanage in Baja, Mexico.
Thank you to all who have prayed, donated, and supported this ministry! There are over 30,000 foster children in Los Angeles alone. We are in awe of how the Lord has been using this small act to bless so many of his beloved children, and we know this is just the start!
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress." James 1:27
